It was announced today that Blizzard is giving the Darkmoon Faire a facelift, and as overdue as I believe it is, I think its a step in the right direction, a better direction. Just as I believe that Transmorgification is a big step in a good direction.

So far Cataclysm has been a fairly  atypical expansion. Only 5 Levels instead of 10, less dungeons and raids (so far) but a huge revamp of nearly every old zone – overall Cataclysm has been a huge overhaul and now they are adding to that. They are revaming content that is available for limited time each month (and hopefully improving it enough to keep us going back), they are introducing what is basically an appearance tab, which people have been asking for for years on end. Additionally they are adding more dungeons, another raid and presumably more gear.

While there are some people complaining that not enough attention is being paid to new content rather then novelty I would argue – new content is great but novelty will last. I may for example not use the Barber Shop much on my main toon .. after all I made him the way I wanted, but I have a guildy who loves it and is racking up hundreds of gold. Novelty will give me something to do outside of raiding, and that is what I need.

How often do you find yourself simply logging in just to do the latest progression raid, or grind out the weekly dungeons or dailies.  Once i finished loremaster, a second time over, I have been searching for something to do solo outside raid times, outside dungeons, things I can do without needing a group.

While solo play is not the aim of a multiplayer game there should be enough of it to amuse me when I am not involved with group play .. but after 5 years, and having done most soloable acheivments, it doesn’t feel like it, and dailies do not feel like I am reaching for some end goal.

The Darkmoon Faire and Transmorgification are a good first step in that direction .. and with that on the horizon who knows what else we can hope for. Player Housing? More novelty items through crafting? Epic Solo Quests? .. The sky is the limit with te possibilities.

So for me if Blizzard can keep pumping out enough solo content alongside group content then things can only get better.

So Transmorgification .. I’m looking forward to it, I have always loved Tier 6, and while Tier 11 looks OK, the Firelands Set isn’t overly great. Combined with the new void stirage I am cheering, it means right off the bat come the next patch I will get close to 30 or more bag spaces back simply by putting old gear into it. So far that is 2 out of 3 that look good.

The appearance of Deathwing though has me troubled. It could be that I am used to the cycle created by TBC and Wrath, or it could be that despite the storyline in every zone leading us to confrontation with Deathwing I don’t feel that taking down his 3 major lieutenants has really left us prepared to face down a dragon responsible for breaking the world and probably empowered by an old god. Hopefully they manage to pull off the Deathwing raid in such a way to create a truly epic  end to the expansion. In fact I could say I wouldn’t be dissapointed if Deathwing escaped to come back in a later expansion.

Beyond that we are told that this is the last patch for Cataclysm, so whats coming next .. this Mists of Pandaria thing? and what else is Blizzard going to give us that we’ve been asking for and they have been denying? Player Housing? Class Titles? Epic Questlines? something to make Archeology enjoyable?

In any event I think that in the next year or so as we progress through the last of Cataclysm and see the new Expansion we have enough surpises in store to keep our appetites for the new and fancy whetted. Will it be enough to compete with new MMO’s coming out like The Old Republic … only time will see.
